Blog: Wiki So Far
I have decided to work on the fashion topic for our class wiki. So far, I have just been researching information I could add to the wiki. It was difficult to pick a topic because most of the topics that were my preferred choice were already on the wiki. However, when I looked on the fashion section of our class wiki, I noticed that there is a lack of streetwear style of fashion. More specifically, the collaborations of high-end brands and everyday brands. The topic I will add is the Off-White and Nike collaborations. Off-White is a relatively new luxury brand when compared with superstars like Gucci and Louis Vuitton. The Off-White was founded by Virgil Abloh in 2012 and has propelled into great heights thanks to its unique style, becoming one of the pioneers of high-end streetwear, and their legendary collaborations with Nike. Their designs have been imitated but never duplicated. Many luxury brands have tried to copy Virgil's formula, but none have succeeded like Virgil has. Off-White has now become an iconic brand thanks to Virgil whose rise to prominence is nothing less than inspirational.
Fashion collaborations with everyday brands have completely changed how people purchase products. Usually, collaboration products are exclusive and limited to drive demand up. The aftermarket price often skyrockets for highly demanded products. Off-White and Nike collaboration sneakers are constantly going up in value because the shoes gain more value as time goes by. It is near impossible to obtain such elusive items because there are millions of people trying to purchase a couple thousand number of sneakers. People use "bots" which are programs that can help people purchase items easier by immediately inputting the card number and shipping information instantaneously as oppose to inputting the information manually which can take up a lot of time. This is the reason the aftermarket for these products exist. Consignment online stores like StockX, Goat, and Grailed exist because of this reason. People purchase the items for retail price and resell it for major profit. There is much more to discuss, but let's leave it for the wiki. These are just the basics of how the market works. I find this very interesting because while I cannot purchase most of what I discussed, the fact that luxury streetwear have taken the fashion industry by storm is very intriguing.
